ABOUT INCIPIENTUS

INCIPIENTUS develops and sells non-invasive, clamp-on pulsed ultrasound based in-line fluid characterization systems for flow visualization, process monitoring and control of opaque, non-Newtonian industrial liquids.

 

Measurements are made non-invasively through process pipes, even through high grade stainless steel pipes. Our instruments are designed to meet Industry 4.0 requirements and delivers real-time data, such as instantaneous velocity profiles and rheology of non-Newtonian industrial liquids. No calibration is needed and the installation is simple. Our patented technology is developed ”In-house” and is based on more than 16 years of research, in close collaboration with industrial partners. In contrast to other competing technologies our instruments measures a complete velocity profile and rheogram. No modeling or calibration is required and no similar solutiont thus exist on the market.

INCIPIENTUS develops and sells several pulsed ultrasound based instruments and non-invasive sensors delivering in-line, real-time data, previously thought difficult or impossible to obtain in industrial liquids. The development started already in the 1990s and the company was inofficially started in 2009 under the internal name“Flow-Viz”.

 

INCIPIENTUS ULTRASOUND FLOW TECHNOLOGIES AB was officially started in 2017 and today consists of employees from RISE and CPUT with different backgrounds and competences but with the same goal; to radically change and improve the industrial process monitoring and quality control of non-Newtonian liquids. A secondary goal is to develop and sell advanced ultrasound pulser-receiver technology and sensors that allows our customers to do measurements not possible with existing instruments. This will lead to new insights and innovations in both academia and industry.

 

 

 

 

By measuring with our developed technology, the fluid properties can be monitored and controlled as the process can be adjusted in real-time. It eliminates the need for costly and time consuming laboratory tests. The installation is simple and non-invasive and no calibration is needed. It can eliminate 90 hours testing / month, the need for manual lab tests by operator and save up to 20% product wastage. This leads, to improved and consistent product quality, less energy and water consumption and also large time savings. No similar solution currently exists on the market that is able to accurately measure the flow profiles and characterize industrial fluids directly in process lines (in-line) and in real-time.

WHAT WE DO

There is a great need to be able to continuously measure the flow profile and flow properties of industrial liquids directly in process lines. The reason for this is simple; liquids (such as ketchup, toothpaste, paint, cosmetics, paper pulp and drilling fluids) exhibit different properties depending on how they flow. More than 95% of all liquid flows in industrial applications exhibit complex (non-Newtonian) flow behaviour. Most of these liquids are opaque and therefore difficult to measure and this poses a great and increasing challenge in many industries; oil, paper pulp, food, chemical, construction etc. Currently, the only available methods able to measure these flows are either off-line (i.e. time consuming lab tests), or invasively within the pipe (disturbing the process and creating large pressure drops). A few in-line systems (e.g. process viscometers) have been introduced but with poor result since they are based on invasive technques or provide single point measurements and are therefore limited to Newtonian liquids.

 

INCIPIENTUS researchers with roots at RISE - Research Institutes of Sweden AB and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Cape Town, South Africa, have jointly solved this problem. INCIPIENTUS has developed a method and system for real-time measurement of complex liquid flows within industrial processes. By measuring the fluid properties with the developed technology, these properties can be monitored and controlled as the process can be adjusted in real-time. The developed technology was orignially called "Flow-Viz" and the method is based on Pulsed Ultrasound Velocimetry or Ultrasound Velocity Profiling combined with Pressure Drop measurements (UVP+PD or PUV+PD). No similar solution currently exists on the market that is able to accurately measure the flow profiles and characterize these complex fluids directly in process lines (in-line) and in real-time. The patented technology platform and the method is granted within the EU, USA, South Africa and Japan.
