Our in-line rheometer installed in a test facility in Norway
Drilling fluids are used to aid the drilling of boreholes into the earth, i.e. for extracting petroleum oil. Drilling fluids are usually non-Newtonian since they consist of both a liquid and a solid. The flow behavior properties of a drilling fluid (primarily viscosity) contribute to several important factors for successful drilling of oil wells, e.g. pressure control, maximizing rate of penetration, providing wellbore stability and removing cuttings from the well. Each well is unique, making it important to be able to visualize and control the drilling fluid flow for each application. The flow needs to be measured throughout the entire drilling operation to maintain the drilling fluids’ ability to perform. If the fluids properties are not measured correctly, it may lead to production stops and delays. Currently there are no accurate in-line measuring systems that can be used in real-time.
It was demonstrated in an industrial test facility that the In-Line Rheometer (ILR) instrument by Incipientus Ultrasound Flow Technologies AB is capable of measuring complete velocity profiles as well as rheology in real life oil-based drilling fluids. The main challenge is the ultrasound attenuation (loss of energy) in these complex drilling muds. Our team is continuously working together with their industrial partners to reduce limitations and improve the robustness of the technology within the oil drilling industry. INCIPIENTUS is currently at the cutting edge of non-invasive ultrasound sensor design for measurements in complex drilling fluids.

It was demonstrated in an industrial test facility that the In-Line Rheometer (ILR) instrument by Incipientus Ultrasound Flow Technologies AB is capable of measuring complete velocity profiles as well as rheology in real life oil-based drilling fluids.
Our ILR instruments have been tested and optimized for both oil- and water based muds. Experiments have been carried out in 2", 1.5" and 1" industrial grade pipe flow loops in our test laboratories in Göteborg, Sweden.
